Beyond ERP – Managing Business Performance

Beyond ERP – Managing Business Performance
by Software Works, Inc

When your company’s ERP is implemented and running smooth (or maybe not) it’s now time to give your C-level management a bird’s eye view of how their company is running.

C-Managers are often not at ease with even the simplest use of computers. But in this information age those that don’t USE and LEARN from their corporate data put themselves, and worse, their company’s livelihood at risk because they may not know the pulse or health of their business.

Vertical industry brief - Pharmaceutical and healthcare

Vertical industry brief - Pharmaceutical and healthcare
by IBS

The pharmaceutical industry is highly competitive, regulated, and in a permanent state of change. Customers demand instant attention, while suppliers require comprehensive leading-edge services with regard to their products. Regulatory authorities require that the industry keep up-to-date with regulations, following them to the letter. Competitors are always inventing new ways to gain market share, while e-business presents new opportunities and challenges. All the while the pressure to reduce prices and to shorten order cycles is high. Pharmaceutical wholesalers comprise the lifeline within the pharmaceutical industry, providing continuity of supply and facilities for storage. They also offer a range of supporting services, such as information technology systems and product withdrawal notifications, which form an essential part of the total healthcare package. These companies and institutions all operate in an environment where speed and efficiency may mean the difference between life and death. However, the industry has a number of specific requirements that are critical for achieving success in the distribution sector.

What is SAP? & What is an ERP ?

Q: What is SAP? & What is an ERP?
Could anyone guide me..What is actually SAP?. AND What is any ERP?
What features does an ERP Package consists of? What are its specialize and what is its significance.?

A:
ERP Software is short for Enterprise Resource Planning software. ERP software aids and controls the ERP management system, which is a system that integrates and automates all facets of business operations. This includes planning, manufacturing, and sales, while more recent ERP software products encompass marketing, inventory control, order tracking, customer service, finance and human resources as well.
More about ERP Basic, just go here

SAP is an acronym for "Systeme, Anwendungen, Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung", which means "Systems, Applications and Products in data processing". The company was founded in 1972 by the former IBM employees Claus Wellenreuther, Hans-Werner Hector, Klaus Tschira, Dietmar Hopp and Hasso Plattner. As of 2005, SAP employs over 28,900 people in more than 50 countries.

SAPs products are in the Enterprise resource planning ERP business sector. The company's main product is SAP R/3, where the "R" stands for Realtime, the number 3 relates to the three tier application architecture: database, application server and client. The predecessor to R/3 was R/2. Other major offerings include APO (Advanced Planner and Optimizer), BW (Business Information Warehouse), CRM (Customer Relationship Management), SRM (Supplier Relationship Management), Human Resource Management Systems (HRMS) and KW (Knowledge Warehouse). The company also offers a new technology platform, named SAP NetWeaver. While its original products are mostly used by larger companies, SAP is now also offering products for small and medium sized enterprises (SME) with SAP Business One and SAP All In One.

ERP Development?

Suggestions for anyone who is going to develope an ERP software

Q. Assuming I am interested to contruct and ERP Package for an MNC chemical industry, what could be my first step and what modules should be construct first...

A1: Enterprise Resource Planning is a large undertaking. Have you looked at existing ERP packages? There are quite a few out there. Having worked with custom and commercial ERP, you really need to perform a feasibility study first and a cost-benefit to determine if any of the existing ERP vendors can provide your solution before trying to develop one yourself. Many ERP projects fail for lack of project planning and analysis.

You may want to take a look at http://www.cio.com/research/erp/edit/erpbasics.html which I found to be a pretty good overview of the basics. It also addresses why they fail.

A2: Well, assuming that you want to build it from scratch, I would start with something relatively simple. Maybe time reporting or invoicing.

You will have to build your framework and implement / integrate your technology for the first release, no matter what it is. Doing a simple module first limits the complexity and lowers your risk.

After that, I would do your AP/AR/GL. This will be a large release. After that, I would do your procurement, MRP, or other modules.

If you are trying to develop the ERP for an industry, you are going to have make it flexible enough for any company in the industry. This will make your product more complex than if you were designing it for a single company.

A3: It does not matter how many ERP packages are available. what matters is what you plan to do. I do see you have narrowed down your scope to MNC chemical industry. This is what is your starting point.

1. Knowledge of the domain/industry (how MNC chemical industry works).
2. One specific area of expertise (say marketing function, inventory management, production, finance, procurement, legal etc) to begin with.
3. Understand what you got to offer.
4. Analyze competitors if anybody is offering similar or any close solution.
5. SWOT based on above.
6. Enough experts at your disposal to drive you to your objective (which includes deep financial pockets).

The objective is to enter into a vertical domain, the more knowledge/business idea you have the better starting point you have. Needless to say have an objective where you want to reach as your ending point.

Software Evaluation

Software Evaluation

Evaluating manufacturing software can be a very overwhelming task for small and mid-sized manufacturers due to the sheer quantity of products to choose from and the complexity of each system. Manufacturers typically manage their evaluation process either in-house or through contracted software consultants and evaluation services.
In-House Evaluation
Some companies prefer to manage the software evaluation process themselves.
They typically develop a long list of potential candidates through multiple
sources that may include word of mouth references from companies in their
industry, Internet searches, online software directories and product reviews,
business and trade magazines, manufacturing and software trade shows, and
other sources. Companies that conduct their own software evaluations should
dedicate an employee to the project of collecting and organizing information for the evaluation team.
Software Consultant
Some manufacturers contract software consultants to manage the evaluation
process. As with any industry, there are good consultants and poor consultants.
Manufacturers should consider consultants with several years of experience and those who are not biased toward a product that their company represents. Many accounting firms and manufacturing extension partnerships also provide software consulting and evaluation services. In addition, there are a handful of credible, unbiased sources that provide detailed product reports and software evaluation services.

“We previously used a home-made system to track returned merchandise, but it was inefficient. Our new RMA module records whether the order requires credit or replacement and automatically initiates the correct action. We’re anticipating a big time savings as we use the system to process customer returns.”

Evaluation Process

(Continue...)
Evaluation Process
Manufacturers should form an internal software evaluation team comprised of
representatives from different departments. A typical evaluation team will
include employees from various departments within your business.
An employee should be designated as the project leader. The project leader
should be responsible for managing the evaluation process. He or she will likely
do a lot of the up-front work to build the initial list of software products and will
work with contracted consultants or evaluation services throughout the
evaluation cycle. Project leaders will also schedule team meetings and software
demonstrations.
The evaluation process typically includes five phases—research, evaluation,
selection, and implementation.

Needs Analysis
• Establish an internal evaluation team with representatives from various
departments within your company
• Hire consultant or contract evaluation service
• Develop needs analysis outlining requirements for a new system
• Establish metrics using current system for future ROI calculations
Research
• Read trade and business magazines
• Attend manufacturing and software trade shows
• Use software directories and product reviews
• Use search engines to find related information
• Ask other companies in your industry what they’re using
• Contracted consultant or evaluation service will also provide in-depth research
Evaluation
• Use the needs analysis to develop a request for proposal (RFP)
• Send the RFP to vendors identified during the research phase
• The evaluation team should use research and RFP information to create a list of 5-10 potential solutions
• Schedule overview demos of each product. Overview demos will typically take 1-2 hours
• The evaluation team should meet after the overview demos to pick 3-5 vendors for a more detailed product demonstration. Detailed demos generally last 4-8 hours.
Selection
• Post-demo team meeting(s) and product selection
• Contact the vendor or reseller, negotiate pricing, define implementation plan
• Coordinate information transfer from evaluation team to implementation team
Implementation
• Define implementation roles and responsibilities
• Establish implementation timeline
• Conference room pilot before going live
• Run new system parallel to existing business system for 1-4 weeks
• Implementation team meetings should continue to meet every month for the first 1-2 years after implementation to monitor progress, discuss ways to optimize the new system, and measure ROI achieved through improved processes (compared to the former system)

đọc dòng chữ in đậm đoạn trên.

RFP Components
As mentioned earlier, a request for proposal (RFP) can help manufacturers collect and analyze information about each software product and vendor that they are considering. Sample RFPs are readily available on the Internet. Most software consultants and evaluation services can also provide needs analysis and RFP templates. In general, most RFP templates include the following sections.

Vendor / Software Profile
• General company information including address, Web site, revenues, stock profile (if publicly traded), years in business, customer base, key executives, and sales contacts.
• Company stability and viability analysis. The market for manufacturing software is currently undergoing considerable consolidation. Like most maturing industries, only a handful of leading vendors will emerge when consolidation is complete. It is imperative that manufacturers consider vendor size and presence in their industry when selecting a new business application as smaller vendors will be at a considerable disadvantage and could be acquired by larger vendors who may discontinue their solutions.
• Software profile including technology platforms supported (such as databases, operating systems, and hardware), manufacturing styles or methodologies supported, customer profile, product version, release descriptions, and more.
System-Wide Features
• General system-wide features including report writer, business intelligence capabilities, e-mail and fax integration, data alerts, security capabilities, decimal precision, critical field lengths (such as GL account, customer ID, vendor ID, item ID, etc.), online help and support for multiple companies, multiple sites, and multiple currencies.
• Customization and integration capabilities including data import/export utilities, integration and customization tools, and links to attached files or documents.

Manufacturing Methodologies
No two manufacturers are alike even if they make the same product. For example, one company may fabricate standard fasteners, which are stocked and sold to distributors at a nominal cost of pennies per piece while another may make fasteners that are fabricated to customer specifications and sold for several dollars because parts are sold with material certifications containing heat numbers, chemical composition, and other data required by nuclear and aerospace industries.
However, there are some commonalities between manufacturers in the way that they manage the manufacturing process. Some manufacturing software products provide deeper support for a particular manufacturing style or methodology than others. The following topics provide a high-level overview of some of the common functionality available in different types of manufacturing systems.

Light Manufacturing / Assembly
Make to Stock
Make to Order
Job Shop
Assemble to Order (ATO)
Configure to Order (CTO)
Engineer to Order (ETO)
Batch Process
Project / Contract / WBS
Lean / Just-in-Time
Remanufacturing / Disassembly
