General Exam Tips: Taking the Exams
I. Get to the Exam in the Right Frame of Mind
In the weeks leading up to the exam, make a dry run of the exam day experience to incorporate the actual exam schedule and to determine commuting time, parking availability, and public transportation schedules. Too often, candidates do not allow enough time on the morning of the exam and arrive at the exam center either late or very close to the starting time. Those candidates are not in a proper frame of mind to maximize their performance on exam day. More about the exam day experience
II. Go to the Right Location
Your admission ticket will list the location of the exam. Please go to that location. It is common for CFA Institute to use two or more venues in a city. You will not be admitted to the exam unless you have an admission ticket for that venue and a current and valid government-issued ID. More about admission tickets and test centers
III. Know Your Calculator
It is essential that you become very familiar with your financial calculator before exam day. Don’t waste precious time during the exam learning how to perform certain calculations because you haven’t practiced enough with the calculator. Read the calculator policy
IV. Rest up the Day Before
Don’t plan to study on the day before or early on the morning of the exam. Spend that time relaxing. Remember, the CFA exam is six hours. You need to be well rested to give yourself the best opportunity to succeed.
V. Focus Inward
Do not to talk to other candidates about the exam during the lunch break on exam day. Inevitably, you will focus on what you did not know during the morning session and this could lower your confidence for the afternoon session.
VI. Last, but Not Least: Test Anxiety
Many candidates underperform (relative to their abilities) on the CFA exams because they suffer from test anxiety. Simply put, they place such importance on their performance that they panic on exam day. Candidates would be well advised to put the exam in perspective. That is, the worst thing that can happen to a candidate on exam day is that they fail.

Given the way the CFA Program is structured, any candidate who fails can register for the next exam administration and try again. Placing too much importance on your outcome can negatively affect your performance. Recognizing that if you fail you will have another chance can help lessen that anxiety.

Exam Day Experience Timing of the Exams
Instructions begin prior to the start of the exam. Testing personnel will keep the official time and will tell you when to start and stop work on each separately timed session. You will be informed of the time remaining at specific intervals.
You must not open the exam or begin work before instructed to do so by the testing personnel. At the end of the exam, you must immediately put pens and pencils down when instructed to do so.
A verbal announcement will be made to all candidates when 30 minutes remain in each timed session. A final reminder will be announced when 15 minutes remain.
A standard exam day follows this format (exact times may vary):
8:00 a.m. Candidates arrive for morning session and begin the check-in process
8:30 a.m. Candidates must be seated
8:45 a.m. Approximate time that doors to testing rooms will close to begin announcements
Once doors close, candidates will not be allowed to enter the testing room until the timed portion of the exams has started.
9:00 a.m. Morning session begins
12:00 p.m. Morning session ends
Lunch break
1:00 p.m. Candidates arrive for afternoon session and begin the check-in process
1:30 p.m. Candidates must be seated
1:45 p.m. Approximate time that doors to testing rooms will close to begin announcements.
Once doors close, candidates will not be allowed to enter the testing room until the timed portion of the exams has started.
2:00 p.m. Afternoon session begins
5:00 p.m. Afternoon session ends
At the conclusion of each session, candidates must remain seated until all exam materials are collected and reconciled. This may require candidates to remain seated for an additional 10-20 minutes.
In testing rooms where there are no clocks the timekeeper will mark time remaining on a chalkboard or flipchart in the following increments:
Less than 2.5 hours remain
Less than 2 hours remain
Less than 1.5 hours remain
Less than 60 minutes remain
Less than 45 minutes remain
Less than 30 minutes remain (verbal announcement)
Less than 15 minutes remain (verbal announcement)
